Cinematical - So ever since Fox Searchlight showed up last summer with a little winner called Little Miss Sunshine, folks immediately began to scour the 2007 slate to see which film would be its cinderella story. Because you need one of those each year; a film that doesn’t feature a full cast of A-listers; doesn’t revolve around the politics of war; and isn’t some two and a half hour period piece about a queen or a famous author with major issues. Well maybe I’m going out a limb here (having not seen the movie yet), but not only will Juno show up on several top ten lists at the end of the year, but I also feel it will land a few award nominations as well (best original screenplay, to give you at least one). The buzz for this film coming off Toronto was stellar; our own Scott Weinberg (who’s opinion you should definitely trust) said: “From arcane pop culture references to casually amusing slang words to pitch-perfect dialog volleys, Juno might be the smartest ‘teen’ movie since the also-brilliant Election.” Big shoes to fill, sure, but I believe it — ever since seeing Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking, I knew this kid was destined to do some wonderful things with the comedy genre. And though the trailer doesn’t provide us with any laugh-out-loud set pieces, it does show a film with tremendous quirk and potential. Heck, I could watch Rainn Wilson call someone “home-skillet” for two hours alone — but that’s me. Juno is set to hit theaters on December 14. Go see it… [Full Story] |

A Trailer For Lee Kang-Sheng’s HELP ME EROS - Twitch
Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Twitch - Taiwanese actor-turned-director Lee Kang-Shen - best known for repeated roles in the films of Tsai Ming-Liang - has just bowed his sophomore directorial effort, Help Me Eros, in Venice, is about to head to Toronto, and the trailer has turned up online. It looks to be a striking and poetic bit of work, sexually explicit though this particular trailer is hosted on YouTube so you know you’re not going to get the naughty stuff. Check out some stills here and view the trailer here… [Full Story]
A Stunning Second Trailer For Bodrov’s MONGOL - Twitch
Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Twitch - Sergei Bodrov’s Mongol has been one of the most anticipated films going around here for nigh on two years now and for good reason. The huge budget Russian epic stars Japanese megastar Tadanobu Asano as Genghis Khan and the international support crew include major players from the likes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and House of Flying Daggers. The film will soon premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and you can bet we Twitch-folk are licking our lips at the chance to finally see it.
And the anticipation just ramped up another notch. The first teaser for the film was good but not great - sloppily edited and poorly encoded so the visuals looked bland and lifeless. Things got much better when a six minute continuous battle scene appeared online. MUCH better. And now, to crown it all, there is a second theatrical trailer and this one is just stunning. It gives a good taste of the plotline and a solid blend of dramatic and action elements along with a series of simply jaw dropping images. This thing is flat out gorgeous. Yum… [Full Story]

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Twitch - There’s been a bad cam version of this floating around for a while but Movies For The Masses have gotten their mitts on a good, clean, high quality, non-bootleg version of the US trailer for Dario Argento’s Toronto-bound The Mother of Tears. A Second Trailer For Pang Ho-Cheung’s EXODUS - Twitch
Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Twitch - Quickly becoming one of my more anticipated titles at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, a second brief trailer for Pang Ho-Cheung’s Exodus has just appeared online and it’s a fantastic piece of absurd dark humor. The latest from the director of Isabella the film revolves around a cult of women who believe men are the source of all evil and, therefore, are hunting them down and killing them. Simon Yam and Nick Cheung is a movie with a concept like that from a director as immensely skilled as Pang makes this a must… [Full Story]

A Trailer For Jia Zhangke’s USELESS - Twitch
Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Twitch - Hugely acclaimed film maker Jia Zhangke, who has won major awards around the globe for both his fictional and documentary work, will be bringing his latest documentary, titled Useless, to the Toronto International Film Festival in just a few days time and the trailer has just arrived. Here’s a snippet of the TIFF description:
In Useless, Jia Zhang-ke’s magnificent new documentary, the filmmaker unfolds the creases of a consumer society where the equation of time and money has demoted human creativity to a peripheral role. Jia gives us an often devastating, but always focused and compassionate image of the fashion world in China, the largest exporter of garments on the planet.
The trailer is hosted on Chinese website Sina, which is notoriously glitchy so you may need to refresh a few times to get it to work, but it is there… [Full Story]

A Website and Trailer For Bruce McDonald’s THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS - Twitch
Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Twitch - A talent who deserves to be treated as one of the giants of the film world here in Canada but seldom gets the attention given to, say, Cronenberg or Egoyan, Bruce McDonald returns to the Toronto International Film Festival with his latest picture, The Tracey Fragments.
The film arrives here fresh from winning the Manfred-Salzberger Prize in Berlin and represents and interesting spin on the road movie that is McDonald’s regular stomping ground. There’s an unusual amount of technical wizardry in this one for McDonald - who normally prefers things raw - as well, with the director emplying a huge amount of split screen. Trailer is fascinating stuff… [Full Story]
