Fresh Stills From Miike’s SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO - Twitch

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Twitch - Many thanks here to Mihail for sending in a series of five high res stills from Japanese cult director Takashi Miike’s loopy spaghetti western Sukiyaki Western Django. Some of these have been seen before in lower res versions, some have not, but they all present a good look at the bizarre energy that fuels the piece. And, yes, we’ve got one of Tarantino in full western garb from his introductory cameo [Full Story]

EXCLUSIVE IMAGES: ‘No Country for Old Men’ - Cinematical

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Cinematical - Cinematical was just handed four exclusive images from the upcoming (and might I add, highly-anticipated) No Country for Old Men, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Their first feature-length film since 2004’s The Ladykillers, No Country for Old Men is based on the book by Cormac McCarthy and has already received tons of praise (”the best Coen Bros. film in years!”) since first premiering last May at the Cannes Film Festival. As James put it ever-so-simply in his Cannes review of the film: “An ordinary man stumbles across a ring of corpses surrounding a fortune in cash and a mountain of heroin. A bad man follows in search of the money; a good man follows in search of the man.” That’s the set-up for No Country for Old Men; from there, I take it a whole mess of trouble creeps into the lives of each man, played by Josh Brolin (the hunter), Javier Bardem (the villain) and Tommy Lee Jones (the Sheriff trying to figure out what in God’s name is going on) [Full Story]

Juno: Four Video Clips - /Film

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

/Film - Here’s the standard recap: I saw Juno at the Toronto Film Festival and in my review I said that it was “the best movie of the year (so far)” and it is this year’s “Little Miss Sunshine”. You may as well find another website to read if you want to avoid an overload in Juno news in the next couple months before the film is unleashed upon the world. Festival screenings have pushed the film to a 9.1 rating on IMDb, and 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes [Full Story]

‘Juno’ Trailer Has Finally Arrived - Cinematical

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

Cinematical - So ever since Fox Searchlight showed up last summer with a little winner called Little Miss Sunshine, folks immediately began to scour the 2007 slate to see which film would be its cinderella story. Because you need one of those each year; a film that doesn’t feature a full cast of A-listers; doesn’t revolve around the politics of war; and isn’t some two and a half hour period piece about a queen or a famous author with major issues. Well maybe I’m going out a limb here (having not seen the movie yet), but not only will Juno show up on several top ten lists at the end of the year, but I also feel it will land a few award nominations as well (best original screenplay, to give you at least one).

The buzz for this film coming off Toronto was stellar; our own Scott Weinberg (who’s opinion you should definitely trust) said: “From arcane pop culture references to casually amusing slang words to pitch-perfect dialog volleys, Juno might be the smartest ‘teen’ movie since the also-brilliant Election.” Big shoes to fill, sure, but I believe it — ever since seeing Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking, I knew this kid was destined to do some wonderful things with the comedy genre. And though the trailer doesn’t provide us with any laugh-out-loud set pieces, it does show a film with tremendous quirk and potential. Heck, I could watch Rainn Wilson call someone “home-skillet” for two hours alone — but that’s me. Juno is set to hit theaters on December 14. Go see it [Full Story]

Colin Farrell’s shopping spree — for a homeless man - Reuters Blogs

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Reuters Blogs - Celebrities at the Toronto International Film Festival are known to hit the shops in the city’s upscale Yorkville neighborhood — but Colin Farrell’s shopping spree to help a homeless man had photographers and TV crews scrambling after an unconventional target and newspapers raving about the Irish actor’s generosity.

Farrell, who’s film ”Cassandra’s Dream” premiered at the festival this week, took a man who goes by the name “Stress” on a shopping spree worth about $2000 at a store that sells outdoor gear, according to local media.

The store owner said Farrell told him to help Stress get anything he wanted and only the best. Purchases included a sleeping bag, a backpack, waterproof jackets, pants, boots and socks.

The pair later went to a bank machine where Farrell took out about $800 which would cover the first and last month’s rent of a room [Full Story]

Vedder rocks fans, not Donahue - Reuters Blogs

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Reuters Blogs - Thunder and lightning, a fierce wind, and cold rain did not deter those who wanted to see talk-show veteran Phil Donahue’s anti-war documentary “Body of War” about Tomas Young, a U.S. soldier who was shot and paralyzed within his first week of duty in Iraq.

It probably helped that Eddie Vedder, front man for rock band Pearl Jam, was on hand to perform two original songs he wrote for the film.

More than 50 people waited in the rush line at last night’s world premiere of “Body of War”. The first person in that line waited five hours for the 9 p.m. screening. A few people wore Pearl Jam t-shirts, and the first four rows were filled with camera-toting fans buzzing about Vedder and chanting “Eddie, Eddie” before the screening. One paid C$55 for a scalper’s ticket, nearly three times the regular box office price [Full Story]
