You can sit wherever you want, however some seats will be reserved for people associated with the film... sometimes the stars themselves will sit in the theatre amongst the 'normal' people. ;-)

For the galas at RTH, a regular ticket will only allow you to sit in the upper balcony (or the sides of the lower balcony). You can't sit in the orchestra level. At the Elgin or Ryerson or presumably the Princess of Wales (it's new this year, so can't say for sure), you can sit anywhere, including the front orchestra.

you get the ticket. you go to the elgin theater (yonge and queen), you arrive 30-60min early, you join the big line outside for your movie. you get inside, sit down and watch movie.

if it's a premium screening, some of the cast & crew will be there. they will either introduce the film and/or hold a Q&A after the film.

I pick the VISA Screening Room package since it comes with the great lounge downstais which is great for client entertaining. Any fallout from the economic downturn and vendors pulling out? I love to promote the fact that Lindt has wonderful chocolates to enjoy a nice glass of red wine with...or chips with your beer.

Just got my confirmed ticket selections back. I picked six premium screenings with my festival pass, and got in to five of them (Creation, Broken Embraces, The Informant!, Bright Star and Baaria). Only A Serious Man went to my second choice pick.

My understanding is exactly what canmark said. The one thing I have to add is that apparently officially the "regular screenings" at the Elgin (Visa Screening Room) are the ones before 6pm. So it's the 2 evening screenings there on which TIFF messed up, so that they are available for us regular ticket/pass holders, when they shouldn't have been.

One thing to remember is that most of the films in that category (evenings at the Elgin) are probably the ones most likely to get a regular release to theatres anyways, so there's a good chance we will get a chance to see them later in the year.

Am I to understand that the amount available for those in the lottery depends entirely upon how many are left after tomorrow's pre-sale? So, my options are:

1. Take part in the donor pre-sale, pay $40 per ticket for movies that I could already have tickets to, so I'm guaranteed a screening; or

2. Ignore the pre-sale, hope to Christ that there are enough tickets left, and hope that I get them for the regular ticket price.

I'm just not exactly in the position to pay more money; that's why I bought the tickets packages. It pains me that it has to be this way, because I made THE perfect schedule for my family and I, and I fear switching shows around will leave them unable to see the movies they want.

EDIT: Oh, nevermind. Jesse at Customer Relations has just informed me that I didn't even donate enough for the pre-sale. Wooooow.

According to an update from TiffTalk (link below), TIFF will honour their error and allow passholders to choose the "premium" Elgin screenings--but are warned that there will be limited availability and advised to consider having a second choice (should your order be processed late in the lottery).

I think that's reasonable, all things considered. It's easier to allow people to choose those films, than to somehow contact everybody and warn them not to choose them. And, of course, you are never guarranteed to get your selections anyways. It's supply and demand, and the luck of the lottery.

I just emailed Customer Relations. I'm way too confused about it, as well. This is only my second year, so maybe someone more familiar with TIFF can tell me why a Special Presentation film would cost the same as a Gala just because it's at the Elgin. When I see that "SP", I automatically think it's a regular screening. Last year, didn't they make all SPs at the Elgin Galas? At least that was less confusing :\

Has TIFF made an official announcement about this? I glanced at the website, but didn't see anything. What about the daytime Elgin screenings--are they considered "premium?"

If it's not raining I may go down to the box office and ask. I don't think it's good that people (volunteers, not their fault) are giving different answers. TIFF needs to resolve this. I spent a few hours last night working on my schedule--I was surprised to see the evening Elgin screenings in the order form and wondered, "Have the rules changed and was I not informed?"

I heard different things from different people. Multiple volunteers who were handing out the envelopes said anything in the Order Book was fair game, but that just didn't seem right given all the previous announcements.

I went over the box office folks, and the person there brought over someone "official looking". He said it was a screw-up that the premium shows were in the Order Book. He wasn't sure what the resolution would be, but advised that if you want to risk picking something obviously "premium" (e.g., those 6pm/9pm showings at Elgin), be sure to have a backup choice because he didn't know if any of those selections would end up being honored.

In any case, sounds like TIFF will have a headache sorting out all the confusion on this! They really should post something on their site and email everyone they can.

The Visa screening room films appear to be on the advance order form, so I think we can use our 10 ticket packages or passes to select these films. If anyone gets an official answer, though, it would be appreciated.

With my 10 ticket package, can I choose films that are screening at the Visa Screening Room? I already have 2 tickets specifically for the Visa Screening Room, but there are no Visa packages for films screening there at like 10am, so I was wondering if regular tickets can be used for those morning Visa Screening films or any Visa screening films.
