TORONTO -- The Toronto International Film Festival is already buzzing with more than word-of-mouth.Blood-sucking bed bugs now threaten to swarm the Sept. 9-19 event.
TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey on Monday tweeted about a pesky infestation at a the Scotiabank Theatre, the main venue for press/industry screenings at the fest.
"Before bed bugs becomes today's meme: We're on it, we're talking to Cineplex and are planning for an itch-free (festival)," Bailey said after pest control was apparently summoned to the rescue.
A long and hot summer in Toronto has led to a citywide fight with the resilient beasties.
Executives at the Cineplex Galaxy exhibition chain, which runs Scotiabank Theatre and is a key partner for the festival, were not available for comment at press time.
A spokesman for Cineplex Entertainment, which runs the Scotiabank Theatre, said the exhibitor is investigating a report received early Monday "from a guest who believes they were bitten by bed bugs at our Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto."
The spokesman added that Cineplex Entertainment will take all steps to address the issue as "the safety and security of our guests and staff are our No. 1 concern."
Edited To Add: According to bedbugregistry.com, looks like it was one guy who went to see Scott Pilgrim in theater 14 on 8/24. He said he was 2-3 rows from the front on the left. Haven't seen any other claims; his film critic friend twittered about it and that is what everyone is quoting.

Yes, supposedly a (female) friend of an out of town film critic claimed to have been bitten by bed bugs while watching Scott Pilgrim at the Scotiabank. I've heard that it was reported to a "cleaner" (not a manager). Scotiabank Theatre management has now been alerted, but I haven't heard that there was confirmation that there actually *are* bed bugs there or not. I myself saw Scott Pilgrim at the Scotiabank and didn't have any problems. Bed bugs seem unlikely, but then it's not inconceivable either.

Just read this Toronto Star article: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/tiff/tiffnews/article/854603--bedbugs-have-tiff-theatres-on-alert?bn=1
The 38-year-old woman, who asked not to be identified, told the Star she woke up with bites on her “thighs, bum and back” about four hours after watching a movie at the theatre last Tuesday. She said she left a message at the theatre, but has not heard back.
“Cineplex has not received any guest reports (of bedbugs) in any of our theatres although recent cases in New York City have caused a flurry of calls, predominately from media, and it has obviously generated guest inquiries,” said Pat Marshall, vice-president of communications for Cineplex Entertainment.

The Star report says "she woke up with bites on her “thighs, bum and back” about four hours after watching a movie." So, when it says she "woke up" does this mean she was in her own bed when she noticed the bites? Maybe the bed bugs are in her own home.
