this may seem like a real random, dumb question but, from past experiences, what is appropriate attire for premium /red carpet screenings. I've seen Q & A s on youtube and all the celebs are in their sunday's best, but does the general public get just as dressed up?

Not at all.

Generally no. The exception is at RTH where sometimes the general public dresses up, but the audience members who dress up are often only going to that one movie as a special occasion. Overall, I'd say that the people at most screenings are running between screenings or work + screenings and it's come-as-you-are :)

Unless you are going to one of the private parties, no need to dress up, even at RTH. I still remember the poor mother/ daughter couple I met in line at an 11am day-after-gala screening of "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" at the Elgin a few years ago. They were both in full evening dress - sequined gowns - at 11am! Turned out that someone had resold them ridiculously overpriced tickets to the regular screening with promises that the cast would attend and that there would be opportunities of meeting Brad Pitt afterwards.

for an evening premium screening you can't go wrong. if you show up in jeans, chances are , half the theatre will be in jeans also, if you show up in a suit, there will be quite a few people in evening dress also as many people make a night out of it and do dinner. I wear whatever is comfortable and fits with my pre/post movie plans. If you dress for whatever you're doing after, you can't go wrong. If the movie is the ONLY thing you're doing, evening casual works.
